New Ebola outbreak declared in Democratic Republic of Congo

The World Health Organization has confirmed an Ebola outbreak in a remote forested part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the first in that country since 2014. At least nine people are suspected of being infected, and three have died.
The outbreak has raised alarms about the possibility of a new epidemic.
"An investigation team led by the Ministry of Health and supported by WHO and partners has deployed and is expected to reach the affected area in the coming days", said Peter Salama, WHO's executive director for emergencies, in a statement.

EDCTP ENDORSE Train the Trainer course (T-t-T) Phase 1

The course took place on 24th to 29th of April 2017 at St. Mary's Lacor Hospital, in Gulu, Uganda and had the participation of 20 healthcare professionals from 9 different Associated Hospitals in Northern Uganda region(namely: St. Mary's Hospital Lacor, Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, Gulu Military Hospital, Gulu Independent Hospital, Kitgum General Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital Kitgum, Dr. Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital, Anaka General Hospital and Pope John XIII Hospital of Atapara).

The course aimed to contribute to the development of an effective bio-risk management in these organizations and in the region, as well as to contribute to their staff's awareness and motivation during a situation of stress such as a possible epidemic outbreaks.

Principles and Practices of Biosafety Workshop May 29 - June 2, 2017 Toronto, Ontario

The International Centre for Infectious Diseases together with the University of Toronto present the Principles and Practices of Biosafety Workshop, a comprehensive 5-day lecture series which introduces the essential elements of biosafety. Participants of this interactive course will have the opportunity to advance their biosafety knowledge in such areas as risk assessment, protective measures, facility and equipment requirements and governmental regulations. The course content has been developed and will be delivered by a diverse panel of experts in the field of Biosafety including University of Toronto Institutional Biosafety Committee members and provincial and federal regulators.

Cameroon: Biosafety - African Experts Brainstorm in Yaounde

Experts from across Africa are brainstorming on biosafety capacity development in the continent. A two-day meeting of biosafety systems, biotechnology and biosafety stakeholders opened on Wednesday May 3, 2017, at Hilton Hotel Yaounde. Opening the meeting organized by New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) Agency African Biosafety Network of Expertise (ABNE), the Secretary General in the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development, Akwa Patrick Kum Bong said it was a privilege for Cameroon to host the high level meeting.
